Description
What is sodium tripolyphosphate? Sodium tripolyphosphate, also known as sodium triphosphate or tripolyphosphate, is an inorganic compound that is the sodium salt of the polyphosphate penta-anion – the conjugate base of triphosphoric acid. It is produced industrially as a component of many different products, especially detergents. It is a colorless salt, which exists in both anhydrous form and as the hexahydrate. Since it is a highly charged chelating agent, it binds to dictions and prevents them from interfering with the sulfonate detergents.
Sodium tripolyphosphate is produced by heating a stoichiometric mixture of disodium phosphate and monosodium phosphate under carefully monitored and controlled conditions. Roughly 2 million tons of sodium tripolyphosphate are produced each year. It can be used as a preservative for seafood, meat, poultry, and animal feed. In food, it can be used as an emulsifier and to retain moisture in products.
